Just south of Camp Pendleton in northern San Diego County, Oceanside is a conclave of military and civilian prowess as well as beautiful scenery. With a famous pier and beautiful beaches, one of which can be seen in the movie Top Gun, the sunsets are stunning, the atmosphere is fun and light, and the people are welcoming.
As you hop on the 5 Freeway traveling south, you’ll hit Carlsbad. With close to 107,000 residents, Carlsbad is famous for the Carlsbad Flower Fields – which are always a hit in the spring. In addition to the flowers, Carlsbad has about 40 percent open space which includes three lagoons, many miles of trails, and close to seven miles of coastline for your ocean-going needs, like surfing and boogie-boarding.
Also in the north part of the county is the classic California community of Encinitas. Encinitas has a population of almost 60,000 residents, and yet it has a small-town feel, like that of Del Mar, its neighbor to the south. Encinitas exudes the true essence of SoCal living with locally-owned shops and restaurants as well as offering opportunities to partake in local cultural and artistic activities and performances, like those offered at the historic La Paloma Theater.
Solana Beach is one of the smallest beach towns in San Diego County, and yet it has been growing leaps and bounds in social action. Solana Beach was the first city in the continental U.S. that enacted a smoking ban on all its beaches, which continued to many other coastal towns in California.
With all of the amenities of a large city and the laidback feel of a beach town, the San Diego suburb of Solana Beach has an identity all its own. Featuring elegant seafood restaurants that feature local catches of the day, to a wooded hiking trail and artisan boutiques that draw you in on a weekend stroll around town, Solana Beach has a great vibe and is accompanied by friendly faces of visitors soaking up the city.
Each and every coastal community of San Diego offers a distinct lifestyle with their own vibe, yet every community embraces what is special about southern California – wonderful beaches, relaxing town scenes, great shopping, excellent restaurants and some of the best entertainment around.
