Smart Homes: Our Favorite Products

Smart Homes. You’ve probably read about them somewhere, and you’ve definitely seen the variety of products available on the market to help make your home “smart”. They’re all the rage right now. What makes a home smart, and is smart (in this instance at least) the right choice for you?

Let’s start with temperature. Here in sunny San Diego, most of us live without heat or a/c – and the majority of us hardly miss it at all. So, what would the benefits be for a San Diego home to have a “smart” heating or air fixture in their home?

Santa Anna Winds. As an East Coast transfer in her first year here, I can tell you that I was not prepared for those – and living in a home without a/c, I sure wish I had it. Having a feature like “Nest” allows you to turn the a/c on when you’re away from home, cooling down your house while you’re at work, ensuring that you arrive home to a comfortable environment.

Speaking of Nest, not only does it help control and monitor temperature, but it also allows you to keep watch on your home. With both interior and exterior cameras, you can know who is at the door – or who came in when you weren’t home.

Speaking of who is home when you’re not – our pets! Who doesn’t get a little bit stressed when Fido is home alone? PetCube, a new “interactive pet camera”, allows you to Facetime with your cats or dogs while you’re away. With two-way audio, you and your pet can hear and “speak” to each other – and when they sit when asked, they can be rewarded with the built-in treat dispenser.

While we’re on the topic of food, smart refrigerators are popping up in homes all over the world. Samsung is the king of “smart fridges”, and dominating the market with over 10 different models. With cameras inside the refrigerator, the days of grocery lists are gone. Now, just take a look at the app on your phone – where you can look directly into your fridge in real-time. The touchscreen on the door also allows family members to make their own grocery lists. It’s even voice activated and can tell you the weather!
